Mark talks ’skills’ he had to learn for Human Target, plus A Short Radio Interview
Valley is no stranger to television. He starred in the short-lived series Pasadena(2001-2002), Keen Eddie (2003-2003), and the popular show Boston Legal (2004-2007) as well as Fringe (2008-2009). He also played Jack Deveraux in the hit daytime drama Days of Our Lives. Valley brings humor and style to his new character of Christopher Chance in Human Target.
When Valley appeared in front of the Television Critics Association’s January 2010 Press Tour he was eager to preview his new show for the critics.
Human Target
Human Target is based on a graphic novel. He joked a little about his physical abilities to perform some of the stunts and tasks that his character performs to protect the clients. “I’ve done a little bit of martial-arts stuff, and I was in the Army as well. They use guns in the Army, you know,” he says with a smirk. “So I’m a little familiar with that sort of thing.” Valley graduated from West Point Academy.
Mark Valley’s character of Christopher Chance is required to have many talents. “I’ve been working on Spanish for this past episode,” he explained. “And, yeah, (for) anybody who says acting isn’t brain surgery, I was doing a scene in Spanish, driving a Jeep through a tent, shooting at a gas tank that explodes and blocks the gate so we are not chased by the Latin American rebels.” While he admitted that wasn’t really in the league of brain surgery, he did want to impress on the critics that he does work hard at his job.
“I spent some time in a flight simulator,” he said. In one of the episodes his character has to take the controls of a passenger jet. In order to put out a fire in the fuselage he flies the plane upside down. “Apparently, you can’t really fly upside down on the simulator for very long because we tried it, and the alarms went off, and we were summarily asked to leave,” he admitted with a sly grin. “But, otherwise, it’s been a great learning experience for me. I’m so excited doing the show. Sometimes when we are shooting a scene, I feel like I’m a 12-year-old who just got up [in] the movie theater and walked up into the screen and said, ‘Well, let me try this.’”

‘Human Target’ Star Explains Differences Between Comic Book And TV Series
The “Human Target” television series premieres this weekend with stars Mark Valley (“Fringe”), Jackie Earle Haley (“Watchmen”) and Chi McBride (“Pushing Daisies”), and while the project is based on a DC Comics title of the same name, fans are likely to notice a few big differences between the TV series and its source material.
For example, main character Christopher Chance no longer assumes the identity of clients who are targeted for assassination, and instead creates a new identity that will put him close enough to protect them and reveal the killer. Valley explained why the change was necessary.
“To be honest with you, when I was reading the comics, I would get a little bit confused,” he confessed. “It’s a graphic novel and usually it’s pretty explanatory, but I was getting a little confused [about] which one is Chance and which one is the real person.”
“They had to go to great lengths even in the comic book to make this exposition and explain [if] this is the real Chance or not,” he added. “Even going as far as doing that on television — they tried doing that with the Rick Springfield show — and I think it’s something that would be really hard to maintain. It would be hard to show it and hard to explain it.”
“This way, it really keeps the spirit of the character, in that he does create a character — he creates someone who comes between [the killer] and the target,” he explained.
As for whether we’ll see a new “Human Target” comic with a Christopher Chance modeled after Valley, the actor said he’s not only open to the idea — he’d love to see himself immortalized in a comic.
“Could you imagine that? A comic with your own likeness?” he gushed. “That’s when I know I’ve made it!”
